While we were in Alabama for my sweet cousin's wedding, we had the chance to get together for a small, family barbecue at my aunt and uncle's home on our last night in town. It was a warm, nearly perfect, July night complete with three kinds of pie, cheddar biscuits, and the sweetest sangria to ever touch your lips. We told stories and caught up on each others lives under twinkle lights while thunder rolled in the background. It was one of those nights I won't soon forget.

quickie update
This is just a quick post to say that going back to work is HARD. I know. I know. You don't feel sorry for me. That's okay. Just let me be sad for a minute and mourn for my summer. And for the fact that our office has moved into a tiny, tin building being held up by cinder blocks. I'm missing my window something fierce right about now.
This is also a quick post to say that I painted our bedroom twice in one week. First green, then purple grey. Also that I should make my pillows prettier before taking photos. That's real life, y'all.
And that I started a new project with an old mirror! Go ahead and disregard the crap in the floor. K thanks.
AND that the lemon tree we thought we killed has come back to life with a vengeance! My black thumb is feeling quite green and a bit self righteous right about now.
Will be back with a finished product, prettier pictures, and wittier words just as soon as I come up for air from the first-week-back-to-school crazies. Which, lets be honest, last much longer than a week.

The boy and I are heading out on a little getaway soon! Destination? Biloxi, Mississippi. We'll be meeting my parents on the coast and visiting my brother who lives in the next town over. I'm excited about this trip for two reasons:
- Most of our road trips these days include a backseat full of fur babies, and while Stella and Griffin make excellent travel pals, they definitely limit activities. Since we won't have pet accommodations in Biloxi, they'll be staying behind in a doggie hotel and we have the freedom to take our time, stop wherever we like along the way, and buy big items without worrying if we can get them home! Good stuff.
- I've never been to Biloxi! I'm excited to explore a new city and hoping we find a few gems hiding in the corners while we're down there.
I would love any recommendations on places to visit, things to do, restaurants to eat at...so if you know of any, send em' on over!

DIY: a coffee table
In the interest of saving money, filling this house with furniture, and creating some sentimental pieces that we can look back on with warm fuzzies, Tanner has been busy sharpening his furniture making skills. After his success building a bed for our master bedroom (which I realize I haven't blogged yet...I.am.terrible.), we set our sights on a new coffee table.
We chose this beauty from Restoration Hardware as our inspiration. I love RH. Even though many of their pieces tend to feel a little heavy and masculine to me, I think they do a good job of blending our styles.
Tanner started the project by drawing up a design based on our inspiration pictures and making a shopping list.

Tanner started the project by drawing up a design based on our inspiration pictures and making a shopping list.
Our original plan was to use reclaimed wood from a store a few towns over, but for one reason or another we just never could make it there on a day they were open. In the end we went with pine boards from Lowe's. Though we've since learned that these probably weren't the best choice for this project (due to pine being a soft wood), this was a learning project and we went with what we knew and what was affordable.
We also had a really hard time finding balusters for the legs. Anybody know where to find these suckers? We searched everywhere--notta. In the end, we decided to go with some solid, chunky candlesticks we found at a Pottery Barn outlet.
Our original plan was to age and/or stain the wood, but first we needed to remove the paint from our PB candlesticks. This did not go well. In fact, it went terribly. We tried sanding, we used a drimel, and we bought every paint stripping product we could get our hands on. N o t h i n g worked. Nothing. After about two weeks of trying to scrape bubblegum smelling orange goop out of the grooves, we gave up. Tanner was ready to throw away the sticks and find something new, and we actually spent a weekend shopping for replacement legs...without success. In the end, we decided to keep our candlesticks and go with paint.
We went with Annie Sloan chalk paint in country grey. I'd had some success using Annie Sloan paint with other projects and thought it would be a good option for the look we wanted.
Please excuse the messy garage...I'm blaming it on the not so recent move.
One of the great things about the Annie Sloan paint is that is doesn't require any sanding or priming before you begin painting. And it's quick drying! It's perfect for people like me who are too impatient to deal with lots and lots of steps. After two coats of the country grey, I covered the wood in one coat of clear wax and one coat of dark wax.
There are so many great Annie Sloan tutorials out there (this one and this one were really helpful) that it really doesn't make sense for me to break down each and every step here... In summary, it's pretty simple. Just stay with the grain of the wood and you can't screw it up.
I am ridiculously happy with the final product and so proud of my boy! Who knew my green, techie husband was such a handy man?!
It was definitely a learning experience, and we have a running bet on whether or not it is sturdy enough to stand the test of time...we shall see. Regardless, we are feeling really excited to try more projects (console table, anyone?), and I can't wait to start decorating this room! We spend so much time here that I really want to make it a beautiful, functional space that reflects both our styles. Pretty sure there's a new rug and side tables in our future.

life recently
We made it to May! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, y'all. In special education (and maybe just education in general) spring is definitely the busy season, and I'm spending most of of my days keeping my head down and trying to power through these next few weeks to that blessed summer vacation. It.is.so.close.I.can.almost.touch.it. !!!
I've felt very lucky this year that I haven't had to bring a lot of work home in the evenings or on the weekends. It's been nice to have that time free to spend on other things--like nesting. and gardening. and meals with friends. and episodes of the office.
We've been rocking the art of furniture making over here lately (we being Tanner), working hard on creating our backyard oasis, and soaking up all the warm weather we can stand. I'm excited to share some of our projects in a bit more detail soon.
Until then here are some photos, courtesy of the iphone, of life around here lately.

and then life got crazy and I nearly died.

Summer school is pretty much the most ridiculously un-fun experience on the planet. Especially when you have two classes at opposite ends of the day. Especially when you have senioritis like woah. Especially when you'd rather be doing fun wedding things and playing on pinterest.
I will be so very relieved one week from now when all this is over, and I can be a normal, pool creeping college kid.

- cuddled
it's official kids
WE HAVE A WEDDING DATE!July 30, 2011 at 6:30pm, I'ma marry that stud right there. Could not be more excited.
This weekend we went to New Orleans to meet with the wedding planner and firm up some of the beginning plans. It was uber successful, and I'm ridiculously happy with the way things are turning out. We found a venue that is hands down on my list of coolest places ever. It's like walking into an anthropologie magazine. I seriously want to live there for the rest of my life. We found a band, a photographer, a caterer AND baker! I felt pretty gosh darn proud of myself when it was all said and done.
So yea, I'm pretty much a happy camper right now.

HEEEEELLLLLOOOO 2011!
I'm going to be nicer to my blog in 2011. I've been neglecting it something terrible. It needs some love.
Anywho. School is back in full swing and life is starting to feel a little more routine.
So far I'm pretty fond of 2011.
It been full of friends and family and dance parties and fresh-made juice and that whole ENGAGEMENT thing. That's right. I got engaged! Gosh, that's fun to say. :) And it was pretty much the most perfect of perfect days. I'm radiantly happy.
Not a whole lot of details on the big day yet--July 2011 in NOLA! That's all she wrote.
I'll leave you with pictures! Everybody loves pictures.

a little love..a little kindess.

today i miss swazi. a lot.
i miss
holding those babies.
dancing with my brothers and sisters.
time to be quiet.
knowing exactly where i'm supposed to be
and
what i'm supposed to be doing.
i miss being pushed outside of my comfort zone
and bunk beds.
i miss accountability
and little buddy
and debrief...yes, i miss debrief.
I miss swazi time and everything that means.
today my heart aches for substance.
